Hamden Fire Department and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials staged a rescue operation at Tuesday night after two people reportedly fell off a cliff while climbing the mountain.
Fire officials said the two were with two other people when they attempted to climb a section of a cliff in a section of the park known as "the quarry," and fell off, prompting the rescue.
Complicating the procedure was the fact that it quickly became dark, which heightened the need for lighting. It took several hours for the crews to get to the hikers and bring them to safety.
Since the park is owned by the state of Connecticut, it falls under DEEP's jurisdiction. In the past, hikers who have needed rescue have often been issued citations, but local officials couldn't say Tuesday night if that would be the case with this incident.
