Shooting in Wallingford Ends in Hamden

A Hamden man allegedly shot his girlfriend in Wallingford Saturday night and then killed himself at a Hamden home.

Police swarmed around a First Street home Sunday morning after it was determined that a man had shot his girlfriend in Wallingford Saturday night and then returned to the Hamden home.

After hours outside the home, Hamden Police found that the man, who hasn't been identified, had killed himself, according to reports.

The man had allegedly shot Leanne Burger-Mestel, 54, of Heritage Woods, Wallingford at her home Saturday night. She survived the shooting and is recovering at Yale-New Haven Hospital, according to police.

The woman was reportedly dating the man who shot her, who lived at 29 First St. Police immediately closed off the road around the home and brought in a SWAT team.

After hearing a gunshot in the house, the team entered and found the man had shot himself, police said. He died at the scene.
