The Candidates: Legislative Council 9th District

Democratic challenger Scott Harris is looking to unseat incumbent Republican Lynn Campo.

Republican candidate Lynn Campo:

For the last two years, I have served as Councilwoman for the 9th district and I hope I have earned your support.

As chair of Finance on the Council, my objectives are to control spending and rebuild the fund balance. Working with the West Woods Neighborhood Association and other residents, I am addressing  traffic calming, road repairs, concerns with QU students in rentals and parking on lawns.

I responded to residents requests for added security and maintenance at both West Woods and Alice Peck schools by calling on the BOE, Police and Public Works.

For 14 years I served on the Board of Education and chaired Goals/Evaluation and emphasized using test results to learn and correct student weaknesses.  We do not teach to the test but to the curriculum.  We significantly narrowed the achievement gap.

As Councilwoman, I serve on the School Building Committee working on renovation of Ridge Hill School.  My experience with West Woods School facility issues leads me to urge a task force of parents, school and town officials to explore options for that 39 year old building.  Planning takes time and we need to start now.

A Hamden resident since 1974, I have a BA in Chemistry and two Masters’ degrees, Business Administration and Information Science.  My children are graduates of Hamden Public Schools: Dee, a PhD geneticist in DC and Elena, an art teacher at a New Haven magnet school.

My husband and I expanded our manufacturing business with a new building in Southern Hamden. We are long-term members of the Hamden Chamber of Commerce.   Running a successful enterprise gives me practical experience Hamden needs.

I am fiscally conservative, I don’t play political games and I believe in service to the public.  I work with Democrats and Republicans for Hamden and the 9th district.

Democratic candidate Scott Harris:

Scott was born in New Haven, Connecticut and, for the past seven years, has been working with Hamden public officials to guarantee a bright future for our town. Scott graduated with Honors from Wilbur Cross High School and achieved a Bachelor’s in Political Science and a Bachelor’s in Legal Studies from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He is currently seeking a Master’s in Communications from Columbia University.

Scott has spent the last seven years working on education and health care reform in the Greater New Haven area. He currently works for the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN), one of the nation’s most effective non-profit public policy advocacy organizations. He has also worked as a legislative analyst and researcher for former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), the Children’s Defense Fund and Health Care for America Now.

Scott is the great nephew of former Hamden Mayor Dick Harris.
