“Capital punishment is against the best judgment of modern criminology and, above all, against the highest expression of love in the nature of God.”

To commemorate the birth and life of Dr. King, community leaders in Hamden will be holding a news conference on Dr. Martin Luther King Day to apply his values to the question of repealing Connecticut’s death penalty.
Mayor Scott Jackson will join a delegation of community leaders that will be reminding people of Dr. King’s opposition to capital punishment and calling on legislators representing Hamden in the General Assembly to finally end the delay in repealing the state’s death penalty.
Other participants will include:
- State Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield, (D-94)
- Rabbi Herbert N. Brockman, Congregation Mishkan Israel
- The Most Rev. Peter Rosazza, Retired Auxiliary Bishop
- Professor Khalilah Dean-Brown, Family member of a murder victim
Dr. King’s life was dedicated to ensuring basic equality and fairness, which evidence shows Connecticut’s death penalty does not provide.
According to a recent study, racial disparities have marred the death penalty’s application in Connecticut. The study by Stanford Law Professor John Donohue found that - in Connecticut as in other states - defendants who murder white victims are more likely to receive death sentences.
Electronic copies of the study will be available on CD at the news conference.
The Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is a sponsor for the event.
