Hamden Church Buying Lorraine Foster School

A Hamden church is buying a neighboring school, and while the school will continue to operate, the church will use school space on the weekends to expand its programs.

The New Haven Korean Church on Glen Parkway sits behind the Lorraine D. Foster Day School on Whitney Avenue and has entered into a contract to buy the school, according to Joseph Porto, an attorney who represented the school before the Planning and Zoning Commission recently.

The church intends to lease the building back to the alternative school, which will continue to operate as usual, he said. 

"There will be no changes in any way to the way the school is operated, no changes in any to the buildings -- they will operate as they are today," Proto said. 

The only change will be the church will use a small portion of the school on the weekends for a Sunday School program and a young adult program, he said.

The church has been very active giving back to the community, he said, including its involvement with groups such as Habitat for Humanity and offering scholarships to Hamden High School students.

It has been in its Hamden neighborhood for two decades with no problems, he said, and one neighbor agreed. 

"We have lived peacefully because they have been responsive to the neighborhood's concerns over the years," said David Goldman, who lives nearby on Short Hill Rd. over the line in North Haven.

Goldman said he was pleased to learn there would be no changes to the fields around the school.

"Generations of Spring Glen children have grown up on those fields," he told the commission.
