Hamden Expanding Property Tax Relief Program For Seniors, Disabled

The program should allow seniors and the disabled to pay the same amount in taxes as last year, despite a tax increase for everyone else.

The Town of Hamden has expanded its tax relief program for seniors and the disabled, increasing the amount of money a person can make to qualify for a property tax break.

Specifically, the program has changed its definition of low income to meet new state standards, according to the New Haven Register. Under the new rules, eligible single and married low-income seniors and disabled residents who make below $16,151 and $19,751 could receive a $1,500 tax credit and elgibile single and married “low-moderate” income seniors who make $16,151 to $32,300 and $19,751 to $39,500 could receive a $1,000 tax credit, according to the Register.

Also, the town is providing an additional $750 to $1,250 for those who qualify, up from last year’s $500 to $1,000, according to the Register.

Hamden is raising its taxes next year, but under this program most people who qualify would pay the same amount of taxes next year as they did this year, according to the New Haven Register.

“This ordinance protects our most vulnerable residents and allows them to not see a tax increase, even though the budget’s increased and there’s pressure on the town in different areas,” Chief Administrative Officer Curt Leng told the New Haven Register. “This has provided a ring of protection for some of our most needy residents.”
