Jackson: There is No Greater Town Than Ours

The Democratic Town Committee unanimously and enthusiastically endorsed Mayor Scott Jackson for another term, as well as long-time Town Clerk Vera Morrison.

From the Hamden Democratic Town Committee:

The Hamden Democratic Town Committee unanimously endorsed Mayor Scott Jackson and Town Clerk Vera Morrison for re-election at their annual convention. In addition, the committee endorsed a full slate of candidates for the Legislative Council and the Board of Education.

The mayor was greeted with a standing ovation after his unanimous endorsement by the party.

"Having grown up in this town, and having chosen to raise my sons here, I know this to be true: there is no town greater than ours," Jackson in his acceptance speech. "We are here tonight to reaffirm our stewardship of Hamden and our belief in the brilliance of its future."

In his acceptance speech, the mayor pointed to what a special town we live in and how fortunate we are to have so many people willing to work and volunteer to make Hamden even better.  He focused portions of his speech on a new "progress, prosperity, and sustainability initiative", a program that looks out further than a political term or a budget year; one that builds upon our community strengths and acknowledges weaknesses.

The initiative has 5 areas of focus:
1) Pension/Benefits Solvency and Reform;
2) Effective infrastructure planning and financing;
3) Education improvement;
4) Offsetting costs to regional entities and grant opportunities; and
5) Fostering an even stronger volunteer spirit.

"No one agrees on everything all the time, but we agree on most things and we all come to this place tonight from an abiding love of our community and a belief that nose-to-the-grindstone work will make tomorrow better than today," said Jackson.

Democratic Party Chairman Lew Panzo was very pleased by the endorsement of all the Democratic candidates.

"Put bluntly, Hamden needs Mayor Jackson to continue to improve the town's financial standing, and complete the comprehensive  pension reform that he has begun. Having someone with the experience, dedication and intelligence to tackle a problem of this magnitude is key. This,  along with the support of a strong Democratic team, is why Hamden has been able to get true pension reform underway this year, while working to stabilize our taxes," Panzo said.

"I'm really proud of our entire slate of candidates, starting with Town Clerk Vera Morrison," he said. "Our team has experienced legislators and board members, as well as new and civic minded individuals - a well rounded balance of quality candidates."
