Obama-Romney Presidential Debate: Who Won?

President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney squared off in their second debate. Patch users in Connecticut offered their thoughts on the debate.

CBS called it “the most rancorous debate ever,” as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney stood toe-to-toe describing the other as a liar. The format was in a “town hall” style and the presidential hopefuls directly confronted each other, often after ignoring the question asked by an audience member.

Patch readers in Connecticut participated in an live blog during the debate. Many commenters already had their decision on who to vote for already made, but others weren’t so certain at the start. Here are some of the reactions.

Obama coming out swinging.

How can anyone actually watch this and think a straight answer is in the near future?

All Mitt needs to do now is stomp his foot LOL (like a 3 year old).

Paul Alexander:

This election is not about Obama/Biden or Romney/Ryan. This election is about US. What kind of people are the majority in this country? What kind of people have the majority become? What kind of people do the majority wish to be in the future?

Obama is so much better than Mitt, Mitt just can't loose the smirk.

You know it seems you all are looking for the best actor here. How about vote on substance and not fluff. Obama has crushed the US the past four years and time for him to leave.

Jimmy Pursey:

This election is a done deal. The Republican Party never had any intention of winning it, hence the comically inept candidates.

This election cycle was about "positioning"...for 2016. Nothing more...nothing less. America is fine. America is strong. Americans have persevered through ACTUAL hardship. How dare you cheapen our nation's struggles. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I'm beginning to think Obama took a dive in the first debate so he could deliver the knockout punch in this one.

If there was a problem, I would much prefer Obama at the helm

Will Wilkin:

As for this election: VOTE SCHMOTE. The 2 parties have only the tiniest differences, both are toxic to the nation, not only shipping our economy overseas but also bankrupting us on permanent multiple undeclared aggressive illegal unconstitutional wars, tearing up the Bill of Rights and Constitution to continue the attempted global military domination on borrowed money.

The Town Hall format is very different from the panel format. This interactive audience style will be harder for President Obama to attack Romney's talking points.

Klair Waters:

When the President speaks about "Green jobs" he is saying there will be more pay offs to his pals.

Romney is clearly a better orator and his responses are much better organized and conveyed.

Romney making up his facts up as he goes along and because all the facts he doesn’t put on the table. He wants to win [but] doesn’t want intelligent conversation.

If I was undecided before I no longer am. Give Obama another 4.

Obama is so awesome!

TV debate style strategy comes into play more than what debaters say on TV. Because there is, no way President Obama could have made such a poor showing in the first presidential debate and make such a good showing in the second presidential debate. Obama lost the first presidential debate because that was has strategy, too loss. You could that an awesome strategy, but there is no way you can call Obama awesome.
Thomas Alegi October 17, 2012 at 04:18 AM
Correction, You could "call" that an awesome dabate strategy, but there is no way you can call Obama awesome.
cheryl October 17, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Awesome is not the correct word. We all knew he would be on the attack since his lack luster in his first debate. But what were his policies for the next 4 yrs. I heard nothing new - status quo. But Romney had a opening re: Libya and didn't take it. I would have said that right now in 4 embassys in 4 countries we have a BLACK ALQAEDA FLAG replacing our America flag on top of OUR soverign land. I would have asked why did O appoint the muslim brotherhood in key positions within our government in the state dept, pentagon, homeland security. Why is CAIR advising the FBI and removing all references of Islamic terrorism in our defence manuals? I would have went on and on. He definiately missed that opportunity. But he was right on when speaking about the economy. Consider that every time we go to the grocery store, fill our gas tanks, pay our electric bills, water, oil to heat our homes we are paying $4300 more as our incomes drop due to higher costs. As far as same pay for women- in his administration women are paid less than men. The second amendment (guns) was to protect Americans against a tyranical government so why should our weapons be less than the gov's weapons. If thats the case we won't have a fighting chance. The second amendment was for our protection against the gov. And as far as brith control where is the man's responsbiltiy on this issue. Why should the gov pay (tax payers) for individual birthcontrol? What about individual responsibility? nope. HE'S SO WRONG.
cheryl October 17, 2012 at 11:32 AM
There was no way but up for O since he bombed in the first debate. Anything would have been an improvement.

Why did Candy Crowley defend Obama on the Libyan cover up and apology that took place for days after the attack? She was the MODERATOR she was supposed to be guiding the debate not participating in it. She was wrong. Obama did not call the embassy attack an act of terror, he just made a general reference to acts of terror. Romney was right. Susan Rice the UN ambassador went on 3 or 4 talk programs and still insisted it was not a planned attack. This administration just recently admitted that it was a terrorist attack on 9/11 and it was preplanned. Conveniently Hillary Clinton came out before last night's debate and took the responsibility for it. The responsibility belongs to the Commander in Chief, President Obama. He should be ashamed for letting her be the fall guy.

Obama had the last four years and he made everything worse. When Obama makes the same promises that he couldn't keep the first go around, it's time to go. After people who never stood up before, made a stand about the healthcare reform all across this country and our elected officials who are suppose to listen to us, refused and went with a party idea that the people weren't behind. Yes, I will take a charitable self made billionaire over an Obama, it's my way or no ones way!
Linda C October 17, 2012 at 05:30 PM
Lisa, Obama doesn't want to be President. His goal is to be DICTATOR or KING like the ISLAMIC COUNTRIES he so admires!! He wants a Socialist Society where the majority (middle class), can no longer afford anything other than a Government Run System. Not BETTER just EQUAL! Everything he has done has been MANDATORY!! As a RULER would do!! Tom so right, his performance was more aggressive, however when all your spouting are Lies - doesn't matter how Loud you get! This is a man who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his IDEAS, yet he can not campaign with his own plan or record of accomplishments, so he resorts to attacking his opponent! Showed once more that Romney is POLITE and has CLASS, unfortunately that limited some of his speaking time. But I'd rather leave the room with my dignity than acting as a thug!! Did you happen to catch the DAGGERS the so called First Lady was shooting at Romney when he was speaking? Classless!! Louise - Terror and Terrorism are so completely different! You are so right it was a cover up for as long as they could get away with it. Thank God for the Internet where the TRUTH can be posted despite the one sided Media coverage!! Romney put it the only way one could. If you want 4 more years of the SAME - Obama is your man. If you would like this country to heal and become the GREAT FORCE WE ONCE WERE - RESPECTED - LAND OF OPPORTUNITY - You have only one way to accomplish that and it isn't with Obama!
LOIS JASON October 17, 2012 at 05:55 PM
How any woman could vote for Romney is beyond me! If he wins we are all back to the 1950's. I remember how it was...Please support OBAMA. Realize nothing is perfect. BUT, we must work together for a better country and world.
Lisa October 17, 2012 at 09:56 PM
Lois, how can you be so ignorant? What has Obama done? Unemployment up, gas up, deficit up, food stamps up. Back to the 50's? Does anyone look at the accomplishments of both sides? Romney went into the Camelot den in Massachusetts and not only did he reduce their deficit, he eliminated it. He reformed healthcare there. States have insurance programs for the poor. The only thing Obama did in four years was force healthcare on the people who finally stood up and said no we don't want this. So, Lois I hope you have health care, because Mr. Obama is going to fine you if you don't or do you fall into qualifying for free and leaving the benefit of providing free healthcare to you to the people who worked hard to get where they are. If your president gets re-elected there is going to be a major decline in our "rich" because they will pick up and move out of the country with their millions and their companies. Taxes go up on Corporations and then they move their plant to Mexico, how many times have we seen this before? In simpler terms. If you get 20% more for the same job in another country, will you do it? I would, it's more I have to give my children. These big corporations have to stay competitive and offer glorious benefits to potential employees. They want the best to stay the best. Keep an open mind!
Louise Connors October 17, 2012 at 11:18 PM
I am so sick of the "war on women". Lois: Don't you realize that Obama and Biden are just using that phrase to scare and manipulate women to get their vote? The real war on women is the administration's economic policies. Everything they do takes more and more money out of the pockets of women and their families. Their refusal to allow the Canadian pipeline to be built costs us more every time we go to the pump. Think of the badly needed jobs the pipeline would provide. The growing deficit devalues the dollar and therefore our earnings don't go as far. Obamacare also takes more money out of our paychecks either by raising premiums or by fining us for not having health insurance. To me, this is the real war on women. t

You gals are great. Can't believe you live in the communist state of CT. Go Girlfriends....Lois is so misguided. Lois, it's all about population control. Do you even know why planned parenthood was originally started and by who? Margret Sanger- she wanted to eliminate blacks, genoide. Look it up. And this is the person who Hillary Clinton admires. You need to do some research and learn about the progressive era. You are clearly on the wrong side. And you think its about womans rights. ha ha.
Don Charles October 18, 2012 at 01:10 PM
Okay Lois here is what your failed President has done so far.Let's see this is the Obama record for the last four years and now he wants another four. Wow that takes guts!! —23 Million Unemployed or Underemployed —47 Million on Food Stamps —5.5 Million Homes in Crisis/Foreclosure —$4500 Drop in Household Income ...See More
Don Charles October 18, 2012 at 01:12 PM
Lois here is the rest of his exceptional record these last four years.$5.5 Trillion of New Debt —$716 Billion in Medicare Cuts —$2.6 Trillion for Obamacare —$1.9 Trillion in New Taxes in Obama’s Budget —100% Increase in Gas Prices
Louise Connors October 18, 2012 at 04:00 PM
Cheryl, It saddens me that CT is a blue state. We have one of the highest costs living in the U.S., yet the voters here continue to support the Democrats. I really wish we were one of the battle ground states, then the election would be very exciting for us. Linda C. is right. America is no longer the great country it was when my grandparents emigrated here in the 1890s. They came for a better opportunity for their children and they were successful. There were small business owners on both sides of my family. That would not possible today.
cheryl October 18, 2012 at 05:41 PM
we can change that. L.Mc Mann is within 2 points behind. Talk to all- get her elected. I live in CT also but vote in FL. This needs to be a land slide or it will be like the 2000 election/ they will steal it as they did with Al Franken in Minnasota. Get to all your family and friends and have them do the same.
LOIS JASON October 18, 2012 at 05:49 PM
I have learned my lesson...In the future, I shall not COMMENT on anything POLITICAL. I shall keep my opinions to myself. Such visceral responses! Be nice PEOPLE.
cheryl October 19, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Lois, not that our comments to you are divisive - honey, you're on the wrong side. You need to be on the side of American values and her principles or we will lose our freedoms and liberties. Stand for her, Stand for our constitution, stand for our founders.
cheryl October 19, 2012 at 09:00 PM
Have you heard? Read the business insider's article today regarding Bengahzi. Seems the ole boy ambassador was gun running for the BHO administration. So along with fast and furious, operation castaway, arms to Libya when we didn't know if we were arming Alqaeda, now Syria- We know that this administration is dealing arms to our enemies. How about that? Here is the article: Read it and weep: http://www.businessinsider.com/us-syria-heavy-weapons-jihadists-2012-10
