Proposal to Ban Smoking in Cars Headed to Hearing

The bill would apply when children 6-years-old and younger are in the car.

Described as an effort to educate the public on the health risks of second-hand smoke, a proposed bill seeks to ban smoking in cars with passengers 6-years-old and younger.

The bill, introduced by state Rep. Henry J. Genga (D-East Hartford),  calls for a warning for the first violation and a ticket and fine for subsequent violations. "A violation would be considered a secondary infraction because the intent is to educate the public on the health risks of second-hand smoke," according to a press release from House Democrats.

The proposal (HB 5380) will be the subject of a public hearing before the legislature’s Transportation Committee, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20. It will be held in Room 2C of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.

Ban cigarettes already if that's the goal. This is just stupid. Because some enterprising jackhole will take this legal precedent and twist it for another purpose down the road. It's known at the law of unintended consequences. It's what these control freaks do *all* day, think of more things to put under governmental control. This law seems ripe for abuse. If your goal is to eliminate smoking then have the courage to introduce that bill.

I would say 90% of smokers are well aware of the medical consequences smoking may cause. As far as the second hand smoke theory, don't believe it's any more dangerous now than it was when my parents chain smoked in closed cars and houses. Only difference now is the knowledge of the theory of second hand smoke. I have not seen any significant studies showing children of my parents era suffer from more cancer related illnesses than children of today. Either way smoker or non smoker, most parents have one thing in common. The welfare of their children, which means most smokers have forgone smoking of any kind when children are present. Enclosed areas that is. All this proposal and so many like them these days is asking for, is to take away yet one more AMERICAN RIGHT! There is nothing lower in my opinion than a Politician who uses the universal soft spot to make their case - yes THE CHILDREN! If their true concern is for the Children, why aren't they seeing to it that most of the federal monies are being used to clean up and fund DCYS or other agencies allocated for the true welfare of THE CHILDREN? There many more important issues pending that need to be addressed in this country. If these politicians are so bored that they have to think of idiotic ways to usurp Americans rights, than maybe they need to get a second job. Remember who you voted you in Sir, it wasn't a CHILD!!
