The 88th District: Call Him Mr. Speaker

State Rep. Brendan Sharkey, who is running unopposed, is expected to become the Speaker of the state House of Representatives in January.

When Brendan Sharkey becomes the Speaker of the House of Representatives in January, he will join Hamden Sen. Martin Looney, D-11, the Senate Majority Leader, in leading the State Legislature.

Sharkey, an attorney who began his career in politics two decades ago in Hamden Town Hall, has served in the state House of Representatives since 2001. He was the Asst. Deputy Leader from 2007-08 and Majority Leader since last year.

Two years ago he faced a challenge from Republican Lesley DeNardis, the daughter of former U.S. Senator Lawrence DeNardis. This year a lack of opponent assures his reelection and his expected assent to Speaker, giving Hamden even more clout in Hartford.
