Volunteers Needed for Town Boards and Commissions

Mayor Scott Jackson is asking residents to consider volunteering their time and talent to one of a number of boards and commissions that have vacancies.

Mayor Jackson said he is looking to increase citizen input to Town Government through participation in its boards and commissions. 

There are 33 volunteer boards and commissions in Hamden, and a complete list may be found on the Town’s web site at www.hamden.com under Government.   Availability on Commissions occurs when terms expire or volunteers resign.  The lengths of terms vary from commission to commission, but most are three years.

Town ordinances require that boards and commissions include representatives of more than one political party.  The majority of the Boards and Commissions meet one evening each month, but some do meet during business hours.

-- There are two vacancies on the Building Board of Appeals for members that are not registered Democrats.  This commission meets as necessary and hears appeals of the decisions of the Building Official.   

-- There is one vacancy on the Cable Advisory Council, which that meets at the Citizens TV Office on State Street on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.  Meetings are televised.   

-- The Clean & Green Commission meets on the third Monday of every month and has two vacancies. 

-- There are two vacancies on the Energy Use & Climate Change Commission.     Its meetings are held at the Hamden Government Center at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. 

-- The Ethics Board is in need of an alternate.  They meet at 8:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every other month. 

-- The Fair Rent Commission meets as needed, and has a vacancy for a citizen representative (not a landlord or tenant) who is not a Democrat. 

-- The Library Board has one vacancy and meets at Miller Library on the first Wednesday of the month. 

-- There is a vacancy on the Natural Resources & Open Space Commission which meets on the last Wednesday of each month at the Government Center. 

-- The town’s Technology Commission has two vacant positions.  Its meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Government Center.
