Graduation Week for 128 Sacred Heart Academy Seniors

The Hamden school has a weeklong series of commencement programs, culminating with graduation on Saturday.


President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71 (Hamden) and Principal Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, ’81 (Hamden) have announced the schedule for year-end events for the Class of 2014. 

On Tuesday, May 20 Honors Convocation will be held at 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. the Alumnae Induction will take place. The Baccalaureate Liturgy will be held Friday, May 23 at 7 p.m. in the Mount Sacred Heart Chapel and Commencement Exercises will take place the following morning, Saturday, May 24 at 11 a.m. in The Philip Paolella Jr. Recreational Center.

Senior and select undergraduate awards will be presented at Honors Convocation when fourth ranking student Courtney Clark (Seymour) will deliver the address. Courtney will attend St. John’s University in the fall and is undecided on a major. Sydney Sullivan (Branford), number five in the class, will deliver the welcome. She will attend Boston College and plans to major in economics and minor in business law.

The entire senior class plans the Baccalaureate Liturgy. Welcoming remarks will be given by student council president Nneoma Obi (Middletown) who will attend UCONN, and closing remarks by senior class president Madeline Ross (Shelton), who will attend Boston University.  A reception for seniors, parents, and faculty, sponsored by the Mothers’ Club, will immediately follow.

Commencement Exercises will take place the next morning, Saturday, May 24 at 11 a.m. in The Philip Paolella, Jr. Recreational Center where President Sister Sheila O’Neill and Principal Sister Maureen Flynn will present diplomas to the Class of 2014. Erin K. Larkin ’92, associate professor of Italian at Southern Connecticut State University, is this year’s commencement speaker. A 1996 cum laude graduate of Yale University, Dr. Larkin earned a Ph.D. in 2007, also from Yale. Named the SCSC Technological Teacher of the Year, Dr. Larkin is extensively published and a member of several professional associations.

During commencement, Caroline Kohnert (Fairfield), third in the class, will deliver the Graduates’ Prayer; she will attend Georgia Institute of Technology and will major in engineering. Olivia Kelley (Huntington), will deliver the salutatory address; she will attend Brown University and is undecided on a major. Madeline Ross (Shelton) will deliver the valedictory address; she will attend Boston University and is undecided on a major. Maddie was named Trustee Scholar and thus has earned a full scholarship to BU.

“The Class of 2014 has been accepted to 184 four-year colleges and universities in and out of the country including American, Amherst, Boston College, BU, Brown, Catholic, Colby, Connecticut College, Cornell, Fairfield, Fordham, Georgetown, George Washington, Georgia Tech, Gettysburg, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Loyola, Miami, Michigan, NYU, Northeastern, Penn State, Providence, Quinnipiac, RPI, RIT, Rutgers, Skidmore, Syracuse, Union, UConn, U Notre Dame, U Rochester, Villanova, Yale and many more. One hundred percent of the class is going on to higher education…our very successful college placement is a result of early planning and students who are focused on their futures. As of mid-May, over $22 million in academic and merit scholarship has been awarded to the Class of 2014,” according to Kerry Alexander (Cheshire), Director of Guidance.
