Bobcats Defeat Vermont, 10-6

No. 20 Quinnipiac Men's Lacrosse Stays Perfect.

 

The nationally-ranked No. 20 Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten on Friday night as the Bobcats defeated the University of Vermont, 10-6, at Severna Park High School in Maryland.

Quinnipiac, now 3-0 for the first time since 2008, received multiple goals from three different players and a career-high five assists from Michael Sagl

Sagl added a goal to complete a six-point night, marking his second straight game with at least five points. Basil KostarasPat Corcoran and Dylan Webster each scored twice, while Jay BinkowskiJake Emms and Ryan Keenan each finished with one apiece. Webster was dominate on the faceoff (13-16) and collected a season-high 12 groundballs.

In addition to a balanced attack, Quinnipiac's defense was tremendous as well. Junior goalie Gill Conners made 14 saves, stopping 70 percent of the shots he faced. The Bobcats also caused 11 turnovers and held Vermont scoreless on the man advantage (0-4).

Quinnipiac jumped out in front in the first quarter behind goals from Corcoran and Keenan. Corcoran's 13th career goal came off a feed from Brendan Wilbur – which extended Wilbur's point streak to 11 games dating back to last season. Two minutes after that, Sagl found Keenan who put away his first career goal as a Bobcat for a 2-0 lead. Vermont countered with two goals in the final six minutes, leaving a 2-2 deadlock after one quarter of play.

The next half hour belonged to the Bobcats though, as Quinnipiac scored six unanswered goals for a commanding 8-2 lead. Emms, Sagl and Kostaras made it 5-2 in favor of the Q at halftime, while Binkowski, Corcoran and Webster extended the lead to six after the break. Vermont stopped the rally by scoring with two minutes left in the third quarter and Quinnipiac carried an 8-3 advantage into the final 15 minutes.

The Catamounts mounted a mini-comeback with three straight goals in the fourth quarter, but the Bobcats would seal the deal in the waning minutes. Kostaras scored QU's ninth goal with a laser from the left wing and Webster concluded the scoring summary with his fourth goal of the season with 3:50 left. Conners and the Bobcat defense buckled down in the final minutes, leaving a final score of 10-6.

For the game, Quinnipiac was significantly better on the faceoff, 15-4, and when the ball was loose. QU nearly doubled up Vermont in groundballs, 41-24; with Conners pickiing up five, Chris Kendall collecting four and Corcoran, Chris Messina and Matt Diehl each with three apiece. QU outshot UVM, 31-26, and went 2-for-5 with a man advantage.

With the win, the Bobcats snapped a five-game skid against Vermont – improving to 2-5 in the all-time series. The Catamounts, now 1-5 on the season, were led by Drew Philie who finished with two goals and six groundballs. Goalie Justin Rosenberg made seven saves in the losing effort.

Quinnipiac will look for its fourth straight win on Tuesday afternoon with its home-opener against Providence. Also undefeated, the Friars will take on Sacred Heart tomorrow before heading over to Hamden on March 12th. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field.
