Urbanminers hosts free workshop on how to build chicken coops and raise hens

On Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10am, Urbanminers in Hamden will offer local residents interested in raising hens, a free workshop about various aspects of building chicken coops and raising hens.  Participants will learn how to build chicken coops using recycled materials such as the ones found at Urbaminers, LLC.  Materials, and do it yourself coop kits can be ordered. The workshop will be in the lecture room at Urbanminers at 30 Manila Avenue in Hamden.

Michael Calhoun, an experienced hen-keeper from Bethany, will provide a detailed yet fun, anecdotal education based on his experience raising dozens of hens for the last decade or so on his small farm. Michael will guide participants through a general outline of keeping hens: their behavior, diet, housing, security and health. There will be chickens on hand for demonstration purposes.

Free coffee and snacks. Donations are welcome.
