WHIZ KIDS: Quinnipiac Senior Leads School's First Golf Team

Brianne Tansey excels both on the green and in the classroom.

Name: Brianne Tansey

Age: 22

Grade: Senior

School: Quinnipiac University

Accomplishment: Quinnipiac University has launched its first ever Varsity Women’s Golf team this Spring, and Tansey was selected by coach John O’Connor as the team captain.

“I’m really excited to be part of the team,” said Tansey. “Playing golf at the college level is something that I’ve always wanted to do and I’m thrilled to be able to have the experience in my last year. We don’t have a ton of expectations on ourselves because it’s a brand new time, but we’re just excited to get going.”

Key to Awesomeness: A native of Nashua, NH, golf has been a part of Tansey’s life from almost the moment she could walk. Her father put a plastic golf club in her hand at the age of 3, and she began to take the sport more seriously at the age of 9. Throughout her teen years, she was a regular in the RI Challenge Cup and the RI Women’s Golf Association Juniors Program. Under the tutelage of PGA pro Phil Fecteau, she eventually made her way onto the Varsity golf team at Bishop Feeney High School, where she was the only girl on the lineup.

Although she wanted to play golf at the college level, Tansey said her academic priorities made it difficult to balance both when looking at schools.

“I wanted to go to a school with a great nursing program, and Quinnipiac has one that is among the best in New England,” said Tansey. "I looked at Sacred Heart as well because they had a golf program, but it felt like balancing that with nursing would be difficult. Luckily, this semester is my easiest year so far, so the timing worked out perfectly.”

In addition to her success on the golf course, Tansey also played for the North Attleboro travel soccer team and for the Ladies Ice Hockey RI Panthers. She was also a member of the National Honor Society.

What’s Next: The Women’s Golf team at Quinnipiac has their first game against Sacred Heart on March 29th. With graduation fast approaching, Tansey said she hopes to spend a year interning at an intensive care unit before going to graduate school with the intent of becoming a nurse.
