QU Women Defeat St. Francis Brooklyn 73-52

Bobcats Improve to 11-2.

 

Jasmine Martin finished with a game-high 18 points on Monday night as the Quinnipiac University women's basketball team cruised past St. Francis Brooklyn, 73-52, on Lender Court at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats improve to 11-2 overall, including a 2-0 mark in NEC competition, and continue the program's best start since 2007-08 campaign.

Martin caught fire midway through the contest en route to a 6-of-11 night from the floor, which also featured 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Felicia Barron and Samantha Guastella joined Martin in double-figures with 13 and 11, respectively, with Barron adding four assists and three steals and Guastella chipping in with eight rebounds. Camryn Warner and Brittany McQuain aided the front court, combining for 15 points and 16 rebounds.

The Bobcats did most of their damage with a monstrous run midway through the game. Ahead by four points with 3:40 remaining in the first half, Quinnipiac boasted a 26-2 run which carried six minutes into the second frame. Martin netted 11 straight at one point as Quinnipiac hit the first five field goals of the second half, including three straight three-pointers by Martin.

The Bobcats' defense also chipped in by holding the Terriers to 15 straight missed field goals, with their two points coming from the free-throw line.

St. Francis Brooklyn entered the game with the NEC's second best defense, allowing just over 58 points per game. Quinnipiac netted 44 in the first half alone and shot 53.1 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes. The Bobcats dominated the paint, 26-14, the backboards, 41-29, and turned 20 turnovers into 27 points on the other end.

Quinnipiac improved to 19-6 all-time against the Terriers, dating back to their first meeting back in 1983. This mark also included a 9-2 record at home and 4-0 at the TD Bank Sports Center.

St. Francis Brooklyn was led by Sarah Benedetti and Jaymee Veney who each finished with 14 points. Benedetti added a team-high six rebounds.

The Bobcats will host intrastate rival Sacred Heart on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the TD Bank Sports Center. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. The Pioneers are off to an 8- 5 start on the season and currently rank seventh in Northeast Conference play.
