BEST PERFORMANCES
Lighting strikes twice for the baseball team. Less than a week after David Cherry fired a no-hitter, Andrew Reel put his signature on a no-no. He shut down Weston last Friday in an 11-1 victory. Reel struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. He gave up an unearned run in the seventh inning as Pomperaug made one of its four errors on the day. Garrett DeLotto picked a bad day to have one of the best days of his career. He had a home run, triple, two singles, and drove in seven of Pomperaug's 11 runs. That performance was slightly overshadowed by the Reel's no-hitter.
Kyle Wilcox continues to shine on the mound for . Last week, the standout pitcher tossed a complete game shutout in the 4-0 win over Brookfield. Wilcox gave up just one hit while striking out seven. He had a stretch of 5 2/3 innings where he pitched perfect baseball. Wilcox helped himself at the plate, belting a three-run home run.
Brandon Sheehan of had a monster day in a 15-2 victory over Oxford last week. He not only picked up the win on the mound, but he had a home run, three doubles, and six RBI's.
Matt Duignan of enjoyed a stellar day at the plate against Bristol Eastern. He collected three hits and drove in four runs in Masuk's 6-4 victory.
Casey Gaynor of stood tall in a showdown against McMahon High School, one of the top baseball teams in the state. The Cardinals pitcher worked six sensational innings, giving up just a bloop single while striking out five. Gaynor and Greenwich shut out the Senators, 4-0.
Travis Docimo had three hits and drove in five runs as beat Trumbull, 12-7, in an FCIAC battle. Casey Mack was mighty strong at the bat for the Eagles. He went 3-for-3 with a three-run HR.
There was no mercy for Harding as Danbury crushed them 32-0. The Hatters banged out 27 hits and scored 16 runs in the sixth inning. Josh Wiltze paced Danbury with four hits and three RBI's. Mike Schweitzer banged out three doubles and drove in four runs. Kevin Williams got more than enough run support and he struck out nine hitters on the day.
J.R Anderson of went the distance against arch-rival Darien. He gave up two runs on six hits while striking out five in the Rams 4-2 victory over the Blue Wave.
Lukas LaBry of demonstrated pin-point control in the Bears 8-1 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe. LaBry threw first-pitch strikes to the first 14 batters he faced. He went the distance, giving up one run on five hits while striking out eight hitters.
Dylan Callahan of Greenwich was brilliant en route to a 4-0 shutout of Wilton. The senior star struck out six and didn't walk a batter. He gave up only three hits in going the distance for the victory.
In lacrosse, star Case Matheis, who is the school's all-time leading scorer, recorded four tallies in the Blue Wave's 10-8 victory over Wilton last Thursday. Matheis, who will be attending Duke next year, ripped home the game-winner with just over three minutes remaining.
New Canaan recorded a crucial 11-5 victory over Staples. Mike Bossidy led the way for the Rams with 3 goals and 2 assists. Peter Kraus added two goals and three helpers.
Ryan Desmond of Fairfield Ludlowe ripped the back of the net five times in a 13-10 victory over Conrard. He also added an assist and goalie Matt Koss made 11 saves in the crease for Ludlowe.
Notre Dame-Fairfield recorded a big win over thanks to the nifty play of Duncan Plumb. Plumb scored four goals and assisted on two others in Notre Dame's 11-9 victory. John Notarfrancesco had 13 saves in the win. Drew Cerone had three goals and an assist in the loss for Stratford.
Newtown continues to roll as they stifled St. Joe's. Dan Hebert had four goals and goalie Evan Issacs made 11 saves in helping Newtown record it's seventh victory of the season.
Three players enjoyed monster offensive performances in Bethel's 16-4 victory over Danbury. Troy Deyo and Brian Crosby recorded six goals and two assists a piece, while Frank Magrone had four goals and two helpers. Ryan Campbell made 12 saves in net for Bethel.
Cheshire snapped a modest two-game skid by beating Branford 11-5. Senior Kevin Adams scored five goals and Will Devine made 20 saves in goal.
Kevin Brown had four goals and an assist for Fairfield Prep in a 13-0 victory over Notre Dame-West Haven.
Hamden beat Wilbur Cross 12-2 behind the sizzling performance of three players. Tyler Stevens, Nick Tafuto, Eli Bonaides scored three goals a piece.
Sean Carroll had five goals and an assist as Staples beat Westhill 14-5
Grant Limone was spectacular for in their 5-4 win over New Fairfield. The Weston goalie recorded 16 saves to help preserve the one-goal victory.
In boy's volleyball, John Neumann had 24 assists, 15 service points, and two aces as ripped off three straight sets against NFA. Russell Davey had seven kills, three blocks, and three service points. Austin Alterio record seven kills, 11 service points and three aces.
Darien continues to steamroll their opponents on the volleyball court. The senior-lade team crush Maloney High School, 3-0. In that game Matt Lee led the Blue Wave with 29 assists and 10 service points. Matt Collier had 12 kills and four digs, while Sam Bryant had 20 service points and nine kills.
LOOK WHO'S TALKING
Case Matheis, one of the top-ranked lacrosse players in the nation, after breaking the all-time scoring record at Darien High School on April 10 against Fairfield Warde:
"It was a really cool moment during the game. Coach B stopped the game and I took a picture with the team," said Matheis, referring to Darien coach Jeff Brameier. "Everyone was happy for me. It was just really cool."
John Distler, coach of Joel Barlow lacrosse team, after beating Newtown, 17-4, in showdown of undefeated teams in SWC:
"In all fairness, we're very senior-oriented," Distler said. "We had a good team last year and they're all a year older, a year more mature. With all these seniors, we better be good."
