QU Men's Hockey to face Canisius Saturday

No. 1 Seed Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Will Face No. 16 Seed Canisius in NCAA Tournament East Regional

The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team has been announced as the No. 1 overall seed in the 2013 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament, as announced on the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, which was televised nationally on ESPNU.

The Bobcats will be the top seed in the East Region at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. and will face the No. 4 seed Canisius on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 5:30 p.m. live on ESPN3.

"We're proud of our team and our accomplishments this season," said ECAC Hockey Tim Taylor Coach of the Year Rand Pecknold. "We still feel we have more to prove."

The Bobcats are currently 27-7-5 overall and are ranked No. 1 in the PairWise Rankings as well as the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Division I poll and No. 2 in the USCHO.com Division I poll. This season, Quinnipiac captured its first ECAC Hockey Regular-Season Championship, hoisting the Cleary Cup after tallying a 17-2-3 record in league play on its way to becoming the first team in league history to finish ahead of the second place team by double-digits in points. Quinnipiac currently features the nation's best team goals-against average, allowing just 1.62 goals per game, and also holds the nation's best penalty kill at 91 percent.  

Canisius received the No. 16 overall seed after defeating Mercyhurst in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament Championship Game on Saturday, Mar. 23. Canisius is 19-18-5 which includes wins in eight straight games.

The East Regional's first semifinal game will be broadcast live on March 30th at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN3 and then re-aired later the same evening on ESPNU at 11:30 p.m. ET. The second semifinal game, featuring the region's No. 2 seed Boston College (22-11-4) and the No. 3 seed Union (21-12-5), will be broadcast live that same night at 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The regional final game, for the right to advance to the 2013 Men's Frozen Four, will be held March 31st at 6:30 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPNU.

The NCAA Frozen Four will be held at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Apr. 11th with the NCAA Championship Game set for Apr. 13th.
