QU Women Cruises Past Wagner, 74-56

The win means the Quinnipiac Women's Basketball team remains unbeaten in conference play.

 

Felicia Barron scored a game-high 16 points and Quinnipiac converted 19 offensive rebounds into 19 second chance points helping the women's basketball team to a 74-56 victory at Wagner College on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Bobcats improve 11-4 at the Spiro Sports Center, but more importantly improve to 18-2 overall and remain perfect in NEC competition (9-0).

Barron collected her 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting which included four field goals from downtown. Ellen Cannon also nabbed double-digits with 10 points and three rebounds, while Nikoline Ostergaard added nine points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jasmine Martin finished with eight points and three steals, while Lisa Lebak and Maria Napolitiano each had six points.

Quinnipiac led from the opening whistle, but Wagner closed the gap to within two points, 29-27, after a Laura Amorosa three-pointer with 3:29 remaining in the first half. The Bobcats responded nicely however, as Napolitiano knocked down a three of her own to start a 14-4 run to close out the stanza. Ostergaard capped off the rally with two seconds left, sending the Bobcats into the locker room with a 43-31 lead.

After the break, Quinnipiac broke the game open with a 16-2 run midway through the second half. Cannon ignited the charge with a three from the wing at the 15:16 mark and Barron capped off the run with a fast-break layup with just less than 10 minutes to play. Quinnipiac held the Seahawks 0-of-6 from the floor and forced seven turnovers during the span. The Bobcats held onto their substantial lead for the remainder of the contest.

Quinnipiac once again turned defense into offense, forcing 23 turnovers – resulting in 24 points on the other end. The Bobcats dominated the glass, 46-33, holding the Seahawks to just four second chance points on five offensive rebounds. Quinnipiac also dished out 23 assists, a season-best in conference play, with a team-best coming from Gillian Abshire.

Quinnipiac improved to 22-6 all-time against the Seahawks and has 18 wins in their last 19 games. This also included a 11-1 mark when playing away from home.

The Bobcats are back in action against Mount St. Mary's on Monday night in Emmitsburg, Md. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Knott Arena. The Mount is off to a 9-10 start and is 5-3 in NEC action.
