Hamden Middle School is the town's newly-constructed school for students in seventh and eighth grades. It sits on Dixwell Avenue behind the town's Veteran's Memorial monument that lists town residents who served in times of war and its auditorium is named in honor of the town's veterans. Years ago the town had two "junior high" schools, Sleeping Giant and Michael J. Whelan, but those were later merged into Hamden Middle School, which operated in the Whelan building on Newhall Street. Age and environmental problems with that facility led to the construction of a brand-new school, offering students state-of-the-art education.
