<p>The Northeastern Center for Forest Health Research is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has offices in both Hamden and Ansonia. The role of the center is to maintain the health of local forests and study insects and diseases that infest it. </p> <p>The center has two research units as well as a laboratory. The Hamden location replaced the center's former New Haven home after that building burned down in 1964.</p> <p>The USDA has research centers in 13 northeastern states to provide forest protection and management. While initially it was formed to study different species and assure reforestation, its mission has expanded to include a focus on environmental issues and land management.</p>
