Wintergreen Magnet School is run by ACES (Area Cooperative Education Services) for students in grades K–8. Students come from Hamden, New Haven, Meriden, Wallingford and Woodbridge. Wintergreen opens for the school year in mid-August and runs through the end of June, giving it a longer school year than its public counterparts. At more than seven hours, the school day also is longer than other schools.

All students are taught Spanish beginning in kindergarten, and students in grades 6–8 are given laptops to use. The school also works with parents to assure that students have computer access at home.

The school is run by ACES and overseen by a board that consists of the superintendent of schools and a Board of Education member from each district represented, as well as the ACES executive director. It boasts an all-day kindergarten program. Students are chosen to attend the school through a lottery system, and applications are available in each town's Board of Education offices.
