Hamden Government Center

The hub of activity that keep the town of Hamden operating is located at the Government Center at the corner of DixwellMore and Evergreen avenues. Under Former Mayor Carl Amento, offices were moved to the more modern facility from Memorial Town Hall, which had grown too small to house all of the town offices. The Government Center offers ample parking, in contrast to the old Town Hall, where parking was always at a premium. The new office facility also is handicapped accessible. Three floors of offices house everything from the Tax Collector to the Planning and Zoning Department to the Town Clerk. Mayor Scott Jackson -- the state's first African-American mayor -- is the current head of town government.

Northeastern Center for Forest Health Research

The Northeastern Center for Forest Health Research is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has offices inMore both Hamden and Ansonia. The role of the center is to maintain the health of local forests and study insects and diseases that infest it. </p> <p>The center has two research units as well as a laboratory. The Hamden location replaced the center's former New Haven home after that building burned down in 1964.</p> <p>The USDA has research centers in 13 northeastern states to provide forest protection and management. While initially it was formed to study different species and assure reforestation, its mission has expanded to include a focus on environmental issues and land management.</p>

Michael J. Whelan Activity Center

The former Hamden Middle School in the Newhall section of town was first known as Michael J. Whelan Jr. High School.More In the 1980's, when the town's second middle school, Sleeping Giant Jr. High School, closed, M.J. Whelan Jr. High School because Hamden Middle School, serving all of the town's seventh- and eighth-grade students. The school closed for good in 2006 when the new Hamden Middle School opened on Dixwell Avenue just down the road from Hamden High School. The former building is now the subject of a state and federal cleanup after it was determined that the area had in the past been used as a dump by the former Eklund Corporation.</p> <p>In the meantime the building is used as a town community center. The Hamden Police Department also has opened a substation in the building.</p>
